Itinerary of Sonargaon & Panam City Tour

  • 08.00 – 08.00 AM: A guide and driver of us will meet you at your hotel lobby/residence, pick you up, and start driving immediately toward Sonargaon, which is located 50 km away from the North Dhaka area and might require about 1.5 to two hours to reach, depending on traffic.
  • 09.30 – 09.50 AM: Visit Goaldi Mosque. Built in 1519, this graceful single-domed mosque is the most impressive of the original capital city’s few extant monuments and a fine example of pre-Mughal architecture in Bengal. We’ll also have a peaceful walk around the surrounding Goaldi village, which once was a suburb of the old capital Sonargaon, and see the villagers’ simple life.
  • 10.00 – 10.40 AM: Visit Folk-arts and Crafts Foundation, which harbor the Boro Sardar Bari and the Folk-arts and Crafts Museum. Boro Sardar Bari is an abandoned mansion of a Hindu businessman with a massive area built in 1901. The foundation was founded on its property in 1975 after a simple renovation of the building. It has been completely renovated later and reopened in 2018. The Folk Arts and Crafts Museum is full of folk arts and handicrafts from the 17th century onwards, showcasing the rich textile culture in Sonargaon.
  • 10.50 – 11.30 PM: Visit the abandoned city Panam Nagar. Built in the early 19th-century, this township consists of a single street, lined with 52 mansions built by wealthy Hindu cotton merchants, abandoned during the partition between India and Pakistan in 1947 when the owners fled to India. Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan back then. This is a highlight of the Sonargaon & Panam City Tour.
  • 11.40 – 12.00 PM: Visit a school made of bamboo for the children of a lower caste Hindu community, who are not accepted in the mainstream Hindu society. Built and run by an NGO, this school brought education to a community that was difficult to get for them before.
  • 12.20 – 01.00 PM: Lunch at a local restaurant with authentic Bangladeshi food.
  • 01.00 – 01.40 PM: Visit the Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah, the third independent Sultan of Bengal and the Ilyas Shahi dynasty (1390–1411). The tomb is built by curving one single piece of black basalt. Hidden in a remote village, this is one of the few remaining architectures from the pre-Mughal period in Sonargaon.
  • 02.00 – 03.30 PM: Take a boat and visit a sandbank island (char) of mighty river Meghna, another highlight of the tour. Here you can experience the traditional life in the villages in Bangladesh. The decorated houses made of corrugated sheets will provide an opportunity to take some interesting photos.
  • 03.30 – 03.30 PM: Back to the boat station and start our return journey toward Dhaka.
  • 05.00 – 05.30 PM: Drop off at the hotel/residence—end of Sonargaon & Panam City Tour.

  • Be prepared to walk a lot on the tour, and wear shoes accordingly.
  • Ladies-friendly public toilets are difficult to find in Bangladesh. You’ll be able to find a suitable toilet only in the restaurant and in a couple of other places. Any time you need to use a toilet, tell your guide in advance. He will arrange a nearby place for you.
