Susan Bicknell visiting a rural area

A very comprehensive and satisfying tour

– Susan Bicknell, London, United Kingdom

“Nijhoom Tours organized a very comprehensive and satisfying tour of this unusual and little-visited country. Mr. Hasan, Arafat the guide, and Liton the driver, managed to take us, 4 ladies of certain ages with baggage, around a country in its infancy of tourism. They certainly showed us “The Best of Bangladesh ” in 18 days on the Original tour.

We saw Mosques, Temples and monasteries, crocodiles, birds and bazaars, rice paddies and brick factories and …People!. They are the smile-iest people I have ever met with a huge penchant for taking ‘Selfies’. We really felt like royalty, but it also allowed us to take photos of them too, for our own memories.

We stayed in 3, 4, and 5-star hotels, boats, including The Rocket, a 100-year-old paddle steamer, a mountain resort, and an eco-lodge on a tea estate with only one blip after a long day’s drive. We visited tribal villages and saw their simple and precarious way of life and we also saw the darker sides of traffic jams, potholes, dust, ship breaking, and huge garment factories. The two latter essential to the economy of this emerging country.

Susan Bicknell with the fellow travelers at Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Chittagong

We also paid a poignant visit to the WW11 Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Chittagong, where people of all denominations and nationalities are remembered. And we took the train to give us a chance to see another way to get around the country.

All religions are tolerated here and the people don’t push their wares at you…but there are colourful and bustling bazaars selling everything you could ever imagine.

Bangladesh is an interesting country, opening itself up to tourism with a big smiling Selfie…so go soon before the crowds rush in and enjoy yourself!”

Deirdre Cockcroft in Sundarbans with the fellow travelers

An excellent introduction to this wonderful country

– Deirdre Cockcroft, Salisbury, United Kingdom

“I was on the Nijhoom Tour in February reviewed by Susan above. I agree completely with all she has written. The word comprehensive does say it all. Wherever we went we were made to feel special.

On the four-cabin boat in the Sundarbans, delicious food and snacks would magically appear from a tiny kitchen space. And from here we made quiet forays up the narrow canals in a small canoe to observe the wildlife. My favorites were the birds, especially the various kingfishers and golden orioles.

Accompanied by a forest ranger with a rifle, we felt safe from wild boars or tigers (rarely seen). We had to be satisfied with the early morning sight of tiger footprints in the mud.

Making popcorn in a village

Our guide Arafat, with us throughout, took us into villages where foreigners a rarity. In one we watched a mother and daughter make popcorn and elsewhere a village enterprise of processing coconuts; the milk, the matting, and residue to fish food; all part of a co-operative. So many different experiences: mosques, temples, museums, floating down rivers, hill tribes……

Everywhere we went we had a smiling welcome and happy to have their photo taken. Although we saw little of actual poverty in the countryside the signs were there of a very precarious way of life dependent on the vagaries of climate. Large areas of paddy fields have been turned into fish farms which although an alternative source of income would not be able to be reinstated again to rice planting.

With a child in a village

We were in Bangladesh in winter which has had no rain for months and unlikely to have any till May. I loved my time there and would like to return at some time during the monsoon season when the trees are refreshed, and during the different crop seasons.

Somehow Bangladesh seems to have only been ‘discovered’ by a few tourists. We have been so lucky to have visited before it becomes a much-deserved tourist destination.

In his ’18 Days, Best of Bangladesh’ Raw Hasan of Nijhoom Tours has put together an excellent introduction to this wonderful country.”
